Give Hachinohe one night if you are breaking the Tohoku Shinkansen run or catching the Hokkaido ferry; two nights only if you add the Tanesashi coast.
Hachinohe is a port city on the Tohoku Shinkansen and the ferry port for Tomakomai in Hokkaido. The sights sit in two clusters, the castle and museum inland and the coast to the east, so it works as a stop rather than a base. Food and the fish market are the strongest reasons to stay.

Get around
The Shinkansen station and the downtown Hon-Hachinohe station are on the same local line, 5–8 min apart. Buses cover the coast and the malls but need some Japanese; taxis wait outside both stations. The city is spread out, so plan on buses or taxis for the coast and the Jomon museum.

- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Museums and the castle close on Mondays and the day after a national holiday: check before you go.
- Kabushima Island is a gull breeding ground from late February to early August: wear a hat and expect noise and droppings.
- Some downtown bars, especially hostess bars, do not admit foreign customers.
- Winter brings heavy snow and slow buses on the coast road.
A calm, low-crime city. The real issues are winter snow and ice, long gaps between coastal buses, and downtown bars with no posted prices: ask the total before you sit.
