Give Gyumri one night from Yerevan for 19th-century black-tuff architecture and a slower, more Russian-inflected town than the capital; skip it if you have fewer than four days in Armenia.

Gyumri (formerly Alexandropol, then Leninakan) is Armenia's second-largest city, on a plateau near the Turkish border. Its Kumayri quarter is built from local black and pink volcanic tuff in a 19th-century Russian-imperial style, and the city has a reputation as Armenia's arts and crafts centre. The October 1988 earthquake killed tens of thousands nearby and flattened much of the centre; reconstruction is still visible.

The centre is compact and walkable. Marshrutkas (shared minibuses) and a slow train link Gyumri to Yerevan in about 2.5–3 hours; local taxis are cheap for reaching Marmashen or Harichavank monastery.
