Gympie
Stop for half a day off the Bruce Highway if gold-era history or the Mary Valley interests you; otherwise pass through and sleep closer to the coast.
Gympie is a small gold-era town on the Bruce Highway about 150 km north of Brisbane, on the road to the Sunshine Coast hinterland and K'gari. Its sights are few and spread out, and the town is not walkable, so it works as a break in a drive rather than a base. Half a day covers the town centre and the gold history; add the Mary Valley villages only if you have a car and time.

A car is the only practical option: the town spreads out and the Mary Valley sights are 20–40 min away. The North Coast rail line links Gympie to Brisbane and to long-distance Queensland services, but nothing else here is walkable.

- The Bruce Highway bypass work around Gympie has changed exits; follow signs rather than an old map.
- Rural roads have wildlife at dawn and dusk.
- Some gold-mining and museum sites run limited hours: check before driving out.
Gympie is a small regional town and feels safe by day. The real risks are highway driving, summer heat and wildlife on rural roads at dawn and dusk.
