Gyenesdiás
Base here 2–3 nights in Jun–Aug for two lake beaches and the Keszthely Hills; outside summer the beaches and most sights close, so come for a day or skip.
Gyenesdiás is a 3,500-person resort village on the west shore of Lake Balaton, 5 minutes by train from Keszthely and 15 km from Hévíz-Balaton Airport. It has two paid lake beaches, a wooded hill behind the village with two lookout towers, and no local bus or taxi. It works as a quiet, cheaper base for Keszthely, Hévíz and the Balaton Uplands rather than as a destination on its own.

Get around
No local bus and no taxi rank: walk, cycle or drive. The Balaton Bicycle Road runs through the village and bikes can be rented at Tourinform (3,000 Ft for three hours, 4,000 Ft for a day). Regional Volánbusz coaches link the neighbouring villages; the train station sits south of the centre.

- No street lighting on some hill paths; take a torch for evening walks.
Very safe for a Hungarian resort village; the real risks are unguarded swimming outside the season, fast cyclists on the Balaton Bicycle Road and unlit hill paths after dark.
