Gwangju is the hub of South Jeolla and the country's democracy capital, 90 minutes from Seoul by KTX. The centre is compact and walkable, food is cheaper and better than in Seoul, and Mudeungsan National Park starts at the city edge. Most travellers use it as a 2-night base before Mokpo, Yeosu or the south coast.

Gwangju is a safe, low-crime city; the real risks are summer heat and rain, traffic on the wide roads, and unmarked bar tabs in the Geumnam-ro nightlife area: ask the total before you order.
