Skip as a base unless you want Namhansanseong or Gonjiam: day-trip from Seoul (40–50 min by bus) or sleep one night near the bus terminal.
Gwangju in Gyeonggi Province is not the Gwangju in South Jeolla: it is a smaller city about 6 km southeast of eastern Seoul, mixing farms, factories and the wooded ridges of Namhansan. The one sight that pulls travellers here is Namhansanseong, a UNESCO-listed mountain fortress. Everything else (ceramic parks, arboretums, a ski slope) is a half-day from the bus terminal. Most trips use it as a day trip from Seoul or a single night.

Get around
Local buses run all day and taxis are cheap; the city is walkable around the terminal. Wide-area red buses (500-1 from Jamsil, 500-2 from Gangnam, 1113-1 from Gangbyeon) link Seoul. Gyeonggi Gwangju Station and Samdong, Chowol and Gonjiam stations sit on Seoul's metropolitan rail network. A subway line into the centre is under construction: check before you rely on it.

- Namhansanseong is closed Mondays and shortens to a 17:00 close from November to March.
- Hwadam Forest closes Mondays; Gonjiam Bandi Forest closes Tuesdays.
- Summer rain is heavy in July and August; trails and fortress walls get slick.
Very safe by big-city standards; the real risks are mountain trails in wet weather, unlit rural roads at night and buses that stop running before midnight. Keep 1330 saved for English help.
