Give Gwanggyo one night as a Suwon base, not a destination: lake park, cafe street, a Shinbundang Line hop to Gangnam in 45 min.
Gwanggyo is a planned new town inside Suwon, built from the early 2000s around a lake park, a provincial government complex and a Shinbundang Line station. There is no old town here: the draw is the lake circuit, the cafe street, two big malls and fast rail to southern Seoul. Most travellers sleep one night, or use it as a quieter, cheaper base for Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress.

Get around
The Shinbundang Line links Gwanggyo Jungang and Gwanggyo (Kyunggi University) stations to Gangnam in about 40–45 min. Local buses run from the transfer centre under Gwanggyo Jungang Station to the lake park, malls and the rest of Suwon. The centre is compact and walkable; taxis are metered and apps such as Kakao T work well. Public bikes (TAZO, Every Bike) and e-bikes cover the park paths.

- Greeting: A slight bow with a 'annyeonghaseyo'; handshake with the right hand, left hand touching the right forearm; avoid: Hugs and cheek kisses with people you have just met
- Age and rank: Expect to be asked your age; it sets how people speak to you. Let the eldest sit and start first; avoid: Calling older people by their given name

Scams and watch-outs
- Shinbundang Line service ends around midnight: check the last train before a late dinner in Seoul.
- Gwanggyo Marugil trail has unpaved sections that get slippery after rain or snow, and no official car park at the trailhead.
- Summer is monsoon season: July alone averages about 285 mm of rain.
- Airport bus stop names vary in English; look for 'Gwanggyo Jungang Station' or 'Gwanggyo'.
Very safe by any big-city standard: the real risks are monsoon rain, icy or muddy trail sections and traffic on the wide roads around the station. No tipping, cards accepted almost everywhere.
