Güssing
Skip unless you have a car and a specific interest in medieval castles or Pannonian folk architecture: half a day from Vienna or Eisenstadt, not a base.
Güssing is a small Burgenland town dominated by its hilltop castle, the only one in Austria built on an extinct volcano. The town itself has no rail station and limited public transport, so it works best as a car stop between Vienna and southern Burgenland or Hungary. The castle, the open-air museum at Gerersdorf and the Heiligenbrunn cellar district are the main draws. Most visitors spend 3–4 hours here.
