Gunpo
군포
Skip Gunpo as a base: no hotel scene worth the detour. Go only for Surisan hiking or the late-April azalea bloom, as a half day from Seoul.
Gunpo is a residential city of about 286,000 people between Anyang and Ansan, 40–60 minutes from central Seoul on Subway Line 4. Its draw is green space, not sights: Surisan and its temple, the azalea hill at Sanbon, a cherry-blossom path by Geumjeong station, and a small mountain forest at Daeyami. There is no reason to sleep here when Seoul, Suwon or Anyang are on the same rail line, but a half day of hiking or a spring flower walk is a real, cheap trip.

Get around
Subway Line 4 runs through the city (Geumjeong, Sanbon, Gunpo, Surisan, Dangjeong, Daeyami) and Line 1 shares the Geumjeong stop; from Seoul Station allow about 1 h, from Gangnam 1–2 h by bus (6501, 3101, 3030, 541, 542). Local buses fill the gaps; taxis start at ₩3,800 and can be booked on Kakao T. Trails start from the stations, so you rarely need a car.

Etiquette
- Greeting: A slight bow with a 'annyeonghaseyo'; handshake with the right hand, left hand touching the right forearm; avoid: Hugs and cheek kisses with people you have just met
- Age and rank: Expect to be asked your age; it sets how people speak to you. Let the eldest sit and start first; avoid: Calling older people by their given name

- Surisan trails are steep in places and unlit after dark; start early and carry water.
- Summer downpours in July–August can close or flood lower paths; check the forecast before hiking.
- Most signs and menus are Korean only; have a translation app ready.
Very safe by any standard: violent crime against visitors is rare and the streets are busy until late. The real risks are trail slips on wet granite, summer heat, and unlit paths after sunset.
