Gulgong
Give Gulgong one night, or a half-day stop off the Castlereagh Highway: the heritage main street and Pioneers' Museum fill 3–4 hours, not a weekend.
Gulgong is a former gold-mining town of about 2,500 people on the Castlereagh Highway, 30 km north of Mudgee in the Central West of New South Wales. Its 19th-century timber shopfronts and the Henry Lawson connection are the draw; most travellers see it as a half-day stop or one night between Mudgee and Dubbo. Two nights only makes sense if you add the surrounding wineries.

Get around
The town is flat and walkable: the heritage strip runs along Mayne and Herbert streets and you can cover it on foot in 20 minutes. A car is needed for the wineries, the highway and any onward travel; there is no local bus network worth planning around.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Fuel and food options thin out after 8pm; eat before the kitchens close.
- Summer days regularly pass 35 °C: carry water and walk the main street early.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the Castlereagh Highway at dawn and dusk.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the back roads towards Mudgee and Dubbo.
A small, quiet country town and generally safe to walk by day or early evening. The real risks are highway driving at dawn and dusk, summer heat and long gaps between fuel and phone coverage.
