Guinea
How to get to Guinea: airports, flights and border crossings
Fly into Conakry (CKY) — it is the only airport most travellers use, reached via Paris, Casablanca, Dakar, Abidjan or Addis Ababa with one connection. Land crossings from Senegal, Mali, Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone work but are slow and rough; get your e-visa pre-approval before any arrival point.

- Wet season (Jun–Oct) makes the Fouta Djallon and southern border roads much slower.

Step by step
First, sort the visa. Guinea uses an online e-visa pre-approval system; apply, pay and print the approval before you fly. Airlines and land border posts ask for it. See guinea visa requirements for the current process and fees (check).
Second, pick the airport. Conakry International (CKY) is the practical answer for almost everyone. It sits on the Kaloum peninsula, roughly 15 km from the city centre, and handles the international carriers that serve the country. Other airstrips exist inland but are not a realistic entry point for a visitor (check).
Third, choose a connection. From North America and Europe the usual hubs are Paris, Casablanca, Dakar, Abidjan and Addis Ababa. From the Gulf and Asia, Addis Ababa or a European hub is the common pattern. Expect one stop from Europe and one or two from further away (check).
Fourth, plan the airport transfer. Taxis wait outside arrivals; agree the fare before you get in, and expect a slow run into central Conakry at peak hours. Some hotels arrange a pickup — worth it on a first night arrival (check).
Fifth, if you are coming overland, plan the crossing for daylight and allow a full day. The main entries are from Senegal (via Koundara in the north), Mali (via Kankan in the east), Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone. Roads are paved in stretches and rough elsewhere, with police and gendarmerie checkpoints. Carry your passport, visa approval and yellow fever certificate where you can reach them (check).
Finally, sort money and connectivity before arrival. Guinean francs are the local currency and cash is king outside Conakry; see guinea currency and tipping and guinea esim.
- Apply for the e-visa first — it gates everything else.
- Fly into Conakry (CKY) unless you are already in the region.
- One stop from Europe, one or two from North America, Asia or Oceania.
- Cross land borders in daylight, in the dry season, with documents to hand.
- Arrange an airport pickup for a late arrival.
Notes
Guinea is not a plug-and-play destination. Flights are limited, so dates fill up around holidays and the dry-season peak. Land borders can close or change hours without notice, and the roads that look short on a map can take most of a day.
Yellow fever vaccination is an entry requirement, and other routine travel vaccines are sensible. Check your government's current advisory before booking, and buy travel insurance that covers medical evacuation — the nearest good hospitals for serious cases are often outside the country (check).
If your trip is mainly the Fouta Djallon highlands, you still enter through Conakry and drive or fly onward from there. Build in a night in the capital at each end rather than trying to connect the same day.
- Carry the e-visa printout and yellow fever certificate together.
- Keep a photocopy of your passport separate from the original.
- Allow a buffer night in Conakry before any long inland drive.
