Guimarães
Give Guimarães one full day and one night: the castle, the palace and Largo da Oliveira are a 15-minute walk apart, and it works as a day-trip from Porto.
Guimarães is the small northern city where Portugal's first king is said to have been born, and its medieval centre is a UNESCO site. The historic core is compact and walkable: castle, palace, old squares and a cable car up Penha mountain. Get around
The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. City buses cost roughly €1.25 a ride and are rarely worth it inside the centre. The Teleférico da Penha cable car climbs to Penha; walking up takes about 30 minutes. Trains run from Guimarães station, about 10 minutes' walk north of the centre.
