Set the phone up before departure, not at the airport. Download the Spanish offline pack in your translation app, save offline Google Maps for Guatemala City, Antigua, Lake Atitlán, Quetzaltenango and Flores, and install WhatsApp on the number you will keep active. Buy a Tigo or Claro SIM at the airport or in town with your passport, or activate an eSIM if your phone supports it. Coverage is weakest on the far side of Lake Atitlán and inside the Petén forest around Tikal, so offline maps and downloaded tickets matter more there.
WhatsApp is the real transport app in Guatemala. Tourist shuttle companies, hotels, hostels, boatmen at Panajachel and tour operators at Flores all take bookings and send pickup times by chat. Save the numbers of your shuttle company and accommodation before you leave Wi-Fi, and confirm the night before each transfer. If a driver is late, a message usually resolves it faster than waiting at the curb.
For getting around, use Uber in Guatemala City and Antigua, where it is the simplest way to avoid negotiating a fare. Outside those two cities, expect tuk-tuks, chicken buses, colectivos and boats, arranged in person or by WhatsApp. Google Maps is reliable for city streets and main highways but can be optimistic on highland roads and lake trails; treat drive times as a floor, not a promise.
Language is the other practical gap. English is common in Antigua, Panajachel and Flores tour offices, and limited elsewhere, so a translation app with a downloaded Spanish pack earns its space. For money, cards work in Antigua and the capital, but cash is the default in villages, markets and small hotels — check your bank's foreign fee before you rely on a card.

Tips
Download everything on Wi-Fi before a travel day: offline maps, your shuttle confirmation, the address of your next hotel in Spanish, and a screenshot of the driver's number. Signal drops on the road to Lake Atitlán, on the climb to Quetzaltenango and on the Flores–Tikal route.
Keep a small power bank. Long shuttle days and boat crossings drain a phone, and charging points are not guaranteed on older buses. Carry a little cash for tuk-tuks, boats and market stalls even when an app quotes a card price.
If a driver asks you to cancel an Uber and pay cash, decide before you get in. It removes your fare record and any support if something goes wrong. For late-night arrivals in Guatemala City, arrange the ride inside the terminal rather than on the street.
