1. Pick your gateway. Guatemala City (GUA) has the most routes and the cheapest fares from North America and Europe. Flores (FRS) is close to Tikal but has few international flights, mostly from Mexico and Belize; most travelers fly GUA and take a domestic hop or a long shuttle to Petén.
2. Book the onward leg. From GUA, Antigua is about an hour by shuttle or taxi, and Lake Atitlán is 3–4 hours by shuttle to Panajachel. Tourist shuttles run by day; do not plan to arrive at night and drive mountain roads.
3. If you enter by land, choose a daylight crossing. The main ones are La Mesilla and El Carmen from Mexico, Melchor de Mencos from Belize, El Florido from Honduras, and Pedro de Alvarado or La Hachadura from El Salvador. Guatemala City airport is small and easy to use, but the area around it is not a place to walk at night. Book a shuttle or a hotel transfer in advance, especially if you land after dark.
