Where to stay in Guam: best areas and types of hotel

Tumon Bay is the default. It holds the largest cluster of hotels, the calmest swimming beach on the island, the main restaurant strip and the duty-free shopping, and it is a short drive from the airport. If you have four or five nights and no car, base there and treat the rest of Guam as day trips.

Pick Hagåtña if your trip is work, government or museums, Tamuning if you want a lower room rate and do not mind driving to the beach, and the south only if you specifically want quiet. Guam is about 50 km long, so nothing on the island is more than roughly an hour away.

The island has one real tourist zone and a handful of alternatives. Match the area to how you will spend the days, not to the hotel brand.

Tumon's beachfront resorts are the largest properties, with pools, waterparks, kids' clubs and several restaurants; they suit families and travellers who want everything on site. Mid-range hotels one or two rows back from the sand cost less and are still a five-minute walk from the water.

Condos and serviced apartments in Tumon and Tamuning work well for stays over a week or for groups, since they add a kitchen. Guesthouses and small inns exist in the villages and in Hagåtña, but the supply is thin — book early if you want one. Hostel-style beds are rare on Guam; budget travellers usually take a motel or a room in Tamuning instead.

Guam prices are in US dollars, and hotel rates move with Japanese and Korean holiday calendars as much as with US ones. December to May is the driest and busiest stretch; June to November is wetter, hotter and cheaper, and sits inside the typhoon season. Book two to three months ahead for high season and holiday weekends, and check the cancellation terms — storm-related changes are common in the wet months.

Rates quoted online often exclude a resort fee, parking and the local hotel occupancy tax. Add those before comparing two hotels. If you are flexible, midweek nights in the shoulder months are usually the cheapest.

Tipping follows US custom: 15–20% in restaurants unless a service charge is already added. Plugs are types A and B at 110 V, so most US devices need no adapter; UK, EU and Australian travellers need one. English is the working language, with CHamoru also official and Japanese and Korean widely spoken in Tumon.

If you plan to drive, a foreign licence is accepted for short visits — check the limit before you rely on it. A car opens the southern loop, Ritidian Point and Piti Bomb Holes, all of which are day trips rather than places to stay. Travel insurance is worth arranging before you fly, particularly in typhoon season.
