Guajará-Mirim
Half a day to cross into Bolivia, or one night if you want the river and the railway museum; not a base for Rondônia.
Guajará-Mirim is a quiet border town on the Mamoré River, opposite Guayaramerín (Bolivia). It is the southern terminus of the Madeira-Mamoré Railway, and most travellers stop here to cross the river or see the railway museum. The town is walkable and low-key; one night is enough unless you are heading deeper into the Bolivian interior.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- The border crossing is informal: small boats cross the Mamoré River in 5 minutes. Check your passport entry/exit stamps on both sides.
- Rainy season (Dec–Mar) can make roads to Porto Velho muddy and slow.
- No ATMs in town: bring cash (BRL) or change money at the border.
Guajará-Mirim is calm; petty theft is the main risk. Keep valuables out of sight, especially at the border. The river crossing is safe but use official boats.
