Grundy
Skip Grundy unless you have a specific reason to be here: the town is small, the main street was relocated after floods, and sights are 30–60 min away. Half a day is enough to see the town and the Appalachian School of Law.
Grundy is the county seat of Buchanan County in Southwest Virginia, a town of about 1,100 people that was rebuilt on higher ground after catastrophic floods in 1977 and 2001. The new downtown is compact and walkable, but most visitors use it as a base for outdoor recreation in the surrounding mountains and along the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. The town itself has limited dining and lodging options, and the nearest larger towns are 45–60 minutes away.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Cell service can be spotty in the surrounding mountains; download offline maps.
- Many restaurants and shops close early, especially on Sundays.
- The Levisa Fork can rise quickly after heavy rain; check river conditions if you plan to fish or kayak.
Grundy is a safe small town. The main risks are driving on winding mountain roads (especially at night or in rain/snow) and limited cell service in the backcountry.
