Grimshaw
Use Grimshaw as a half-day stop on the Mackenzie Highway, not a base: 2–3 hours for Mile Zero park and the pioneer museum, then move on.
Grimshaw is a town of about 2,700 people in the Peace Country of northwestern Alberta and the mile-zero marker of the Mackenzie Highway, the road that runs north toward the Northwest Territories. It is a farming and distribution centre, not a sightseeing town. Most travellers pass through on Highway 2 between Grande Prairie and Peace River, or stop one night on the long drive north. The worthwhile stops are small: the Mile Zero monument and arboretum, the Lac Cardinal Pioneer Village Museum, and the lakes and trails just outside town.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long: Grande Prairie is about 172 km away and Edmonton about 511 km, so plan fuel and food stops.
- Winter driving on Highway 2 and Highway 35 is icy and remote; check road conditions before setting out.
- Campgrounds at Lac Cardinal take no reservations; Queen Elizabeth sites can fill on summer weekends.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the back roads and in the wildland park.
A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are long driving distances, winter road conditions and wildlife on the highways at dawn and dusk.
