Griffith
Go for 2 nights with a car: cellar doors, Italian food and Cocoparra. Without a car, one night is enough.
Griffith is an irrigation town in the southwestern Riverina, laid out by Walter Burley Griffin and built on wine, fruit and rice. Cellar doors and the national park sit outside town, so a car decides your trip. Two nights covers the wineries, the museum and a park walk; one night is enough if you are passing through on the Kidman Way.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer days pass 40°C; do park walks before 10:00 and carry water.
- Cellar door hours are short and some close on weekdays — ring ahead.
- Kangaroos on rural roads at dawn and dusk.
- Fuel and phone coverage thin out on the Kidman Way and Burley Griffin Way.
A safe country town; the real risks are summer heat, long rural drives and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk. Lock the car and keep water with you.
