Grey River
Go only if you are a self-contained salmon angler or hiker with a booked lodge: 1–2 nights, ferry or helicopter in, no shops for gear.
Grey River is an outport of about 100 people on Newfoundland's southwest coast, reachable only by ferry or helicopter. There is no road, no fuel, no rental car and no hotel strip: two fishing lodges, two small stores and a fjord that splits into three arms. It suits anglers and hikers who book ahead and bring what they need; everyone else should treat it as a boat stop, not a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Ferry to Grey River runs only a few days a week: check the current schedule before you plan anything.
- Wind often cancels sailings; build a spare day into the trip.
- No fuel, no pharmacy and no gear shop: bring tackle, medication and cash.
- Cell coverage is limited; tell someone your plan before you leave Burgeo.
Low crime; the real risks are weather, cold water and isolation. Sailings cancel in wind, there is no road out, and help comes by boat or helicopter.
