Grenfell
Give Grenfell half a day if you are passing on the Mid-Western Highway; one night only if you want the Chrysler museum and the Lawson obelisk without rushing.
Grenfell is a small gold-era service town in the NSW Central West, about 3.5 hours' drive west of Sydney and roughly an hour from Cowra. It is known as the birthplace of bush poet Henry Lawson and for a private Chrysler car collection on Main Street. Most travellers see it as a short stop on a Central West loop rather than a destination in its own right.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Fuel and food options thin out after about 20:00; fill up and eat before then.
- Summer days regularly pass 35°C; carry water and avoid midday walking.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the rural roads between towns.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the road at dawn and dusk: slow down.
Grenfell is a quiet country town and crime is not a practical concern. The real risks are heat in summer, wildlife on rural roads at dawn and dusk, and bushfire in the surrounding farmland: check Fire Danger Ratings before driving out.
