Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants. Carry cash for minibuses, markets, smaller food stalls and anything on Carriacou. ATMs exist around St George's and Grand Anse; outside the south-west, plan ahead.

How to cut the bill

Eat where the island eats: roti shops, bakeries and Friday fish fries cost a fraction of hotel restaurants. Use minibuses instead of taxis on the Grand Anse to St George's run. Pick one big paid activity, such as a dive or a sailing day, and fill the rest of the week with beaches, waterfalls and spice estate walks that cost little or nothing.

Travel in the dry season if you want reliable weather, but note that December to April is peak season and room rates are highest then. Off-season deals on rooms are the single largest lever on your total.
