Sort your apps in this order: ferries, taxis, maps, then everything else. Ferry tickets are the one booking where the app genuinely changes what you can do, because island routes sell out in July and August and schedules shift with wind.

Ferryhopper aggregates most Greek ferry operators in one timetable and lets you compare routes and buy tickets; the operators' own apps (Blue Star, Seajets, Minoan, Golden Star) are the fallback when a sailing is not listed or you need to change a booking. Keep the booking reference and a screenshot of the ticket: port Wi-Fi and mobile data can be unreliable at the gate.

In Athens, FreeNow and Uber both work for taxis and are the easiest way to avoid explaining an address in Greek. Outside Athens, ride-hailing is thin; taxis are metered, and hotels and tavernas will often call one for you. Many small businesses take bookings by Viber or WhatsApp, so having one of those installed helps.

Google Maps is reliable for driving and walking in cities and on main island roads, but rural tracks and some footpaths are incomplete. Download the offline map for each island or region before you leave Wi-Fi. For Athens buses, trolleybuses and metro, the Athens Transport (OASA) app covers timetables and tickets; the metro itself is simple enough to use without an app.

For domestic flights, Aegean Airlines and Sky Express apps handle check-in and send schedule-change notices, which matter on island routes. Tips

Do not rely on a single ferry app. If a sailing is missing or sold out, check the operator's own site or app, then a travel agency at the port. In peak season, book days ahead rather than same-day.

Buy a Greek prepaid SIM or a travel eSIM if you want data without roaming charges; a passport is needed to register a local SIM. Coverage fades at sea between islands and in mountain villages, so offline maps and screenshots are the practical backup.
