Grande Prairie
Give Grande Prairie one night as a Peace Country base: the dinosaur museum and Muskoseepi Park trails fill a day, and Highway 43 runs on to the Alaska Highway.
Grande Prairie is the largest city in the Peace Country, about 456 km northwest of Edmonton on Highway 43, with a regional airport and daily bus links. It is a service city for oil, gas, farming and forestry rather than a sightseeing stop, and most travellers use it as a bed and a supply point before or after the Alaska Highway. One full day covers the dinosaur museum, the gallery and the creek trails.

Get around
Grande Prairie Transit runs five routes, roughly every 30 min at peak and hourly off-peak, with reduced weekend service; adult fare $3.25. Most hotels sit on the highway strip, so a car or taxi is the practical way to reach the dinosaur museum and the airport. Downtown and Muskoseepi Park are walkable from each other.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter runs from October to April: snow on the ground, −20 °C days, and daylight only about 9:15–16:30 in December.
- The airport has no bus connection: book a taxi before you land.
- Distances are long: Edmonton is about 456 km southeast and Dawson Creek about 1.5 h west by car.
- Summer is short and can be wet; pack a rain layer for the trails.
A safe small city by Canadian standards; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 43, black ice, and long gaps between services if you break down outside town.
