Grand Portage
Half a day for the National Monument and Pigeon River Falls, or a full day if you add the Isle Royale ferry. Not a base: pass through or sleep one night.
Grand Portage is a small Ojibwe reservation on Lake Superior's North Shore, 35 miles northeast of Grand Marais. Its draw is the Grand Portage National Monument, a reconstructed fur-trade fort and the 8.5-mile portage trail, plus Pigeon River Falls in the state park. Most visitors stop for a few hours en route to Thunder Bay or catch the ferry to Isle Royale.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- The Isle Royale ferry runs only mid-June through mid-September; book ahead.
- Pigeon River Falls is in Minnesota, not Ontario; no passport needed for the state park.
- Cell service can be patchy; download maps offline.
- Bring bug spray: black flies and mosquitoes are heavy in June and July.
Very safe. The main risks are wildlife on the road (moose, deer) and the cold lake: no lifeguards, water stays cold even in summer.
