Grand Bruit
Skip as a destination: no ferry since 2010, no power, no beds. Go only by private boat, as a day stop, with your own supplies.
Grand Bruit is an abandoned outport on Newfoundland's south coast, emptied in 2010 when the last 31 residents were paid to leave. Houses, a church and a cemetery still stand, split by a waterfall that gave the place its name. There is no ferry, no electricity and no commercial bed: the closest B&B is in Rose Blanche. Treat it as a boat-access ghost village, not a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No ferry has stopped here since 2010: confirm any boat arrangement in writing before you commit.
- No electricity, no post office, no shops, no phone coverage assumed: carry water, food and a way to call for help.
- Weather on this coast turns fast; fog and swell can strand a small craft for a day or more.
- Buildings are private property, some used seasonally as cottages: look, don't enter or take anything.
Remote and unserviced: the real risks are weather, cold water and having no way to call for help. Go with a local boat, tell someone your plan and carry more food and water than you need.
