Grand-Bassam
Go for one night, two if you want beach time: the UNESCO old town walks in 2–3 hours, and it is 45 min from Abidjan by road.
Grand-Bassam was the French colonial capital of the region from 1893 to 1896, then a working seaport until Abidjan took over from the 1930s. The old town, Ancien Bassam, sits on the south side of the Ébrié Lagoon and holds most of the colonial buildings; Nouveau Bassam, across a small bridge, is the business half. It is a compact, walkable town with a beach that locals use heavily at weekends, and it works as a day trip or a single overnight from Abidjan.

Get around
The old town is compact and flat: walk it. Between Ancien and Nouveau Bassam you cross the lagoon bridge, and beyond that you take a bush taxi. Taxis are shared and cheap; agree the fare before you get in.

- The sea has strong currents and no lifeguards: swim near other people, not alone.
- The beach in Ancien Bassam carries a lot of litter; the sand is not the reason to come.
- Some colonial buildings are derelict and unsafe to enter, including the old Palais de Justice.
- Weekend afternoons bring crowds from Abidjan; go on a weekday if you want the old town quiet.
Grand-Bassam is calm by Abidjan standards and the old town is fine on foot in daylight. The real risks are the sea (strong currents, no lifeguards), unlit streets after dark, and petty theft at the crowded weekend beach.
