Granada

Granada is a walking city with a fixed rhythm: sights before 11:00, shade at midday, the Calzada and the square after 16:00, and a booked shuttle at both ends of the trip.

Granada is compact and hot, with everything a first visit needs inside a dozen cobbled blocks. The trips that go wrong arrive at Managua airport with no transfer arranged, or plan walks at midday. Four clusters cover a first visit: the square and cathedral, La Calzada, La Merced, and the San Francisco convent. Masaya volcano, Laguna de Apoyo and the lake islets are trips from one kept bed.

Lively evenings on the pedestrian street; guesthouses and hostels with staffed windows: send your arrival time, and expect noise until late.

First-timers: a hotel a few blocks from the square with a courtyard and a night desk; the car reaches the door and the sights are on foot.

Language

Spanish with a Central American accent and 'vos' instead of 'tú'. English is spoken in tourist businesses and as Creole on the Caribbean coast, where Miskito and other Indigenous languages are also first languages.

  • 'Buenas' works as a greeting all day; 'dale' means OK.
  • Granada and San Juan del Sur have cheap Spanish schools.
