Best day trips from Granada: how to get there and what to see

Granada sits on the northwest shore of Lake Nicaragua, which is why the short trips are volcanic and the long ones are lake or ocean. Masaya and Laguna de Apoyo are close enough to combine with a normal sightseeing day; Ometepe and San Juan del Sur eat the whole day and are better as overnights if your schedule allows.

Distances below are road distances from Granada centre and times assume a shuttle or taxi, not the chicken bus, which stops often.

Masaya is the classic first outing: a drive-through volcanic crater you view from the rim road, with the Masaya craft market and the white town of Masaya on the way back. Most tours run in the late afternoon so you see the crater after dark, when the glow is easier to spot. Check INETER alerts before you go; the park closes at short notice when gas activity rises.

Laguna de Apoyo is a crater lake between Granada and Masaya, warm, deep and clean enough to swim. Several lakeside hostels and restaurants sell day passes with a lounger and a kayak, which is the simplest way to spend a few hours. Bring cash; card machines are unreliable up there.

Ometepe is the ambitious day. You reach the island by ferry from San Jorge near Rivas, landing at Moyogalpa, and the crossing takes about an hour. A same-day return gives you a scooter or a short hike and a lot of waiting; two nights on the island is the better version. Ferries are weather-dependent, so build slack into the plan.

San Juan del Sur is a surf town with a bay, a beach and a Christ statue viewpoint. It is a long way for one day. If you only want sand and swimming, Laguna de Apoyo is closer and cheaper; go to San Juan del Sur if you want surf lessons, seafood and a night out.

Mombacho volcano rises just south of Granada and has cloud-forest trails and a zip line. Access to the upper trails is usually by park truck from the entrance, and the road is steep; confirm opening days and transport at the gate.

Prices are 2026 estimates in US dollars, the currency most tourist services quote in Nicaragua. Local buses cost a fraction of shuttles but take longer and rarely run to a schedule you can plan around.

A private taxi for a half-day is often the best value for two or more people, because you set the stops. Agree the total and the waiting time before you leave.
