Gradiška
One day is enough for a border‑town walk, a quick river view and a bus ride to Banja Luka; skip if you have limited time.
Gradiška is a small border town in Bosanska Krajina, about an hour by bus from Banja Luka. Its main interest is the border atmosphere and nearby river, so a half‑day to a full day covers everything.

Language
Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian are the same language in three standards; locals will understand each other and a few words in any of them. English is good among under-40s and in tourism. Latin script is standard in the Federation; Republika Srpska uses Cyrillic first.
- Learn a few Cyrillic letters before visiting Republika Srpska (Trebinje, Višegrad, Banja Luka): bus boards and street names are in Cyrillic.
- 'Merhaba' and 'selam' are common greetings in Sarajevo; 'dobar dan' works everywhere.
- Call the language by what the speaker calls it; when unsure, 'your language' (naš jezik) avoids offence.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'dobar dan', 'merhaba' or 'selam' in Sarajevo; avoid: Assuming everyone is Muslim or everyone is Serb
- Coffee invitation: Accept and sit; it is hospitality; avoid: Rushing off after one sip
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring sweets or coffee; avoid: Refusing all food
- Mosques: Cover up, shoes off, quiet; avoid: Walking in front of people praying
- Politics: Ask about daily life and let people lead; avoid: Declaring who was right in the war
Scams and watch-outs
- Border crossing checks can cause delays; have passport ready.
- Limited nightlife; plan meals earlier.
A quiet border town and generally safe to walk by day. The real risks are the Sava-side roads at night, unlit stretches on the way to the crossing, and winter ice on pavements; keep your passport and vehicle papers on you near the border.
