Graaff-Reinet is South Africa's fourth-oldest town and the oldest in the Eastern Cape, founded in 1786 and holding more national monuments (about 220) than any other town in the country. It sits in the eastern Great Karoo on the N9, halfway between the Garden Route and the interior, and works as a two-night stop on a self-drive rather than a destination in itself. The town centre is walkable; the Valley of Desolation and Camdeboo National Park are a short drive out.

Get around
The historic centre is small enough to walk: Church Street, Caledon Street and the Dutch Reformed Church are all within about 15 minutes on foot. For the Valley of Desolation and Camdeboo National Park you need a car or a booked tour — local operators run half- and full-day trips from Church Street. There is no useful public transport in town.
