Goolwa
Give Goolwa one full day plus a night: wharf precinct, barrage walk and a Murray cruise. Two nights if you add the Cockle Train and Coorong.
Goolwa sits where Australia's longest river system meets the sea, 18 km east of Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula. It is a small town (about 2,350 people) with a working wharf, a heritage railway, a barrage you can walk out onto and houseboats heading upstream. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop between Victor Harbor and the Coorong; one night turns it into a proper stop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The barrage is entered from the south side only; there is no access from Hindmarsh Island.
- Summer UV is extreme: cover up, and check fire danger ratings before driving out of town.
- Many kitchens close by 20:00 and some venues shut early in winter: check hours the day you go.
- The Murray mouth itself is viewed from Hindmarsh Island inside Coorong National Park; a park pass may apply.
Very safe for a small town. The real risks are summer heat and UV, unpatrolled surf at Goolwa Beach, and long unlit roads at night: drive to conditions and tell someone your route if you head into the Coorong.
