The Golan is a basalt plateau of extinct volcanoes, spring-fed streams and waterfalls, roughly 60–90 minutes' drive from Tiberias. Public transport is the thinnest in Israel, so a car (or a night in the region) is what makes it work. Spring is the season: wildflowers, full streams. Summer turns the plateau brown and hot. The Hermon, at 2,236 m, is the only place in Israel with a ski site. Note the security line: do not travel within 4 km of the Lebanese and Syrian borders.

Golan plateau: Spring is the peak: wildflowers and the strongest waterfalls. Summer is dry and brown with little shade. Winter brings rain and cold nights.
Mount Hermon: Far more snow than anywhere else in Israel; the country's only ski site operates in winter.
