Gokarna is a temple town of about 26,000 people on the Karnataka coast, and the beaches south of it — Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise — are reached on foot or by boat, not by road. Most visitors sleep on the beaches and walk into town once for the Mahabaleshwar temple. Three nights covers it; the monsoon closes the shacks and makes the cliff paths dangerous.

Get around
On foot inside town and along the beach cliff path; the walk from Gokarna beach to Kudle takes about 20 minutes, Kudle to Om about 20 more, Om to Half Moon about 20, Half Moon to Paradise about 20. Om Beach is the only southern beach with road access — rickshaws from town quote around ₹200–250, so bargain. In season, shared boats run between the beaches for about ₹100 (₹150 to Paradise); a chartered return to Paradise with an hour ashore runs about ₹400. Bicycles can be rented in town.

Scams and watch-outs
- Swimming: currents off these beaches are strong — ask locally before going in, and never swim far at Paradise.
- The cliff path between Om, Half Moon and Paradise is dangerous in the monsoon; do not attempt it wet.
- Dolphin-watching speedboat rides are short and often show nothing — decide before you pay.
- Peak season (Nov–Feb) fills the beach huts; book ahead or arrive early in the day.
- Beach shacks and many guesthouses close outside the season; Half Moon has no electric power.
- Gokarna is a conservative pilgrimage town: cover up away from the beaches and do not carry alcohol to the temples.
Gokarna is calm and low-crime, and the real risks are the sea and the cliffs: strong currents, unlit paths after dark and a monsoon that closes the shacks. Solo women report hassle on the beaches rather than danger — keep to lit guesthouses at night.
