Give Goderich one night, two if you want beach time: the octagonal Square, the museum and the sunset boardwalk fit a half-day, the beaches want a full one.
Goderich is a small Lake Huron town of about 7,700 people at the mouth of the Maitland River, built around an octagonal courthouse square laid out in the 1840s. It works as a one-night stop on a Lake Huron drive or as a beach base: three public beaches, a mile-plus boardwalk, and the oldest light station on the lake. The salt mine under the lake is the largest underground salt mine in the world, though you cannot visit it.
