Glenrowan
Stop for 2–3 hours off the Hume if you care about Ned Kelly; sleep in Wangaratta, 8 km north, and skip Glenrowan as an overnight base.
Glenrowan is a small Hume Highway town, population about 960, known as the site of Ned Kelly's last stand in 1880. There is no train stop and no accommodation in town, so it works as a half-day break between Melbourne and Albury or as a base in nearby Wangaratta. Two or three hours covers the museum, the siege site and the Big Ned Kelly statue.

- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission

- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting

Scams and watch-outs
- No accommodation and no pub in Glenrowan: book a bed in Wangaratta before you arrive.
- No passenger trains stop here; the nearest station is Wangaratta.
- Summer days can hit 40°C with little shade at the siege site: carry water and go early.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the Hume and local roads at dawn and dusk.
Very safe. The real risks are summer heat at the unshaded siege site, wildlife on the Hume at dawn and dusk, and driving tired on a long highway leg.
