Skip Glenrothes as a base unless you land late at Edinburgh or want cheap Fife beds: 1 night, then move to Falkland Palace or the coast.
Glenrothes is a post-war New Town in central Fife, built from 1948 for coalfield workers, with low-rise housing, green space and few sights of its own. It works as a cheap, quiet stop between Edinburgh and the East Neuk or St Andrews, and its one real draw is Falkland Palace, 10 miles north. Most travellers pass through; a night here is enough.

Get around
The town sprawls over several miles, so walk only within the centre. Buses to Kirkcaldy and Leven criss-cross it and reach both railway stations; Stagecoach X37 to Kirkcaldy takes about 30 min. Taxis are the fallback in the evening. A car makes Falkland, the Lomond Hills and the coast far easier.

- The two stations are outside town: Glenrothes with Thornton is 3 miles south, Markinch 2 miles east. Neither is walkable with bags.
- Glenrothes with Thornton has no ticket machine and no staff: buy from the conductor if you start there.
- Trains no longer loop to the coast; reaching Kirkcaldy by rail means doubling back via Inverkeithing.
- Town-centre eating is mostly fast food; the pubs and hotels do better.
- Do not confuse the Lomond Hills above Falkland with Ben Lomond, about 80 miles west.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real issues are dark unlit paths between the sprawled estates, drink in the town centre on weekend nights, and weather on the Lomond Hills. Standard UK caution applies.
