Give Glencolmcille one full day and one night if you have a car; without wheels, skip it — the sights are 3–8 km apart on lanes with no bus.

Glencolmcille is a scattered Gaeltacht parish on Donegal's north-west coast: a folk village, court tombs and a holy well walk, with Slieve League cliffs 15 minutes away at Teelin. There is no town centre to speak of, one bus a day from Donegal Town, and almost no mobile signal. Come with a car, sleep one or two nights, and treat it as a quiet base for the cliffs and the coast road.

Get around

You need a car. Local Link bus 293 runs about five times daily from Donegal Town via Killybegs, Kilcar and Carrick to Glencolmcille and Malinmore (about 75 min), but nothing serves the tombs, the beaches or Slieve League. McGeehan Coach 991 from Letterkenny no longer reaches Glencolmcille — it stops at Killybegs. Taxis: Killybegs Cabs, +353 87 278 8278. Roads are single-track with sheep; allow more time than the map suggests.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Mobile signal is patchy on all Irish networks and there is no 5G; download maps and tickets before you arrive.
  • Single-track lanes with passing places, sheep and tractors; drive on the left and slow down on blind bends.
  • Slieve League: the upper car park charges about €10 for two hours / €15 a day, or park free at the cliffs centre and take the shuttle (adult €9, child €7).
  • One Man's Pass and Pilgrim's Path are exposed ridge walks with sudden wind; they are not for casual walkers or children.
  • Rathlin O'Birne and the sea off Malin Beg are hazardous; landings are allowed but only with a competent operator and proper fuel and safety gear.
  • Many cafés and bars close early outside summer; check hours before relying on a late meal.

Very low crime; the real risks are the sea, the cliffs and the roads. Walk the Slieve League ridge only in dry, low-wind weather, keep back from the edge, and tell someone your route — mountain rescue covers this area.
