Glasgow airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Glasgow Airport sits at Paisley, roughly 13 km west of the city centre, and it is the one big UK airport with no train station of its own. The practical choice is between the 500 Glasgow Airport Express bus, which drops you at Buchanan Bus Station beside Queen Street and Buchanan Street, and a black cab or pre-booked taxi to your door.

For a solo traveller or a couple heading to a hotel near the bus station or the subway, the bus wins on cost and is barely slower. For three or four people, a late-night landing, or a hotel south of the river, a taxi is often worth the extra £15 or so. Allow 45–60 minutes door to door either way at peak times.

Prices are 2026 estimates; buy the bus ticket from the driver or at the airport stand, and confirm the taxi fare before you get in.

The 500 Glasgow Airport Express runs from the terminal forecourt to Buchanan Bus Station, with stops on the way in. Buses are frequent through the day and less so overnight, so check the last departure if you land after midnight. Buy on board with contactless or a card; keep the ticket if you bought a return. From Buchanan Bus Station you can walk to Queen Street and Central stations in about 5–10 minutes, or pick up the subway at Buchanan Street for the West End and the south side.

Taxis wait at the rank outside arrivals and take card. The official Glasgow black cabs are metered; private-hire cars must be booked in advance and cannot be hailed at the rank. If you use a ride-hailing app, follow the signs to the designated pickup area rather than the taxi rank.

The cheap route by public transport is bus or taxi to Paisley Gilmour Street, then a ScotRail train to Glasgow Central, about 10–15 minutes. This is worth it if you are staying near Central, or continuing to Ayrshire and the coast. It is not worth it with luggage for a first visit, because you change vehicles twice.

Driving in is straightforward on the M8, but central Glasgow has a low emission zone covering the city centre, so check your hire car meets the standard before you drive in. Parking in the centre is expensive; most hotels charge £15–25 a night.

A solo traveller on the bus pays about £10–12 each way, so £20–24 return, against £25–35 for a taxi one way. Two people on a return bus trip spend roughly £30–34; a taxi both ways is about £50–70. Four people in one taxi pay about £7–9 each, which undercuts the bus.

Add the onward leg: a subway ride in the centre is a few pounds, and a ScotRail train from Central to Paisley or Ayr is separate. If you are heading straight to Edinburgh, the bus to Buchanan then a train from Queen Street is usually faster than any airport-to-airport coach.
