Gisborne is a small, warm, dry beach city on the East Coast, 3 h by road from Napier and about 1 h by air from Auckland or Wellington. It is the first city in the world to see the sun rise, which makes it a New Year's Eve destination. The town itself walks in 15 minutes; a car pays off for the surf beaches, wineries and the arboretum.
