Gilgandra
Stop for one night as a highway break, not a destination: the museum and the Coo-ee centre fill half a day, then move on.
Gilgandra is a town of about 3,100 at the meeting of the Newell, Castlereagh and Oxley highways in the Central West of New South Wales, 64 km north of Dubbo. Almost everyone arrives by car and leaves the next morning. One night covers the museum, the visitor centre and a pub meal; two nights only makes sense if you are breaking a long inland drive.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Long highway stretches with few services: fill the tank and carry water before leaving Dubbo or Coonabarabran.
- Kangaroos and stock on the road at dawn and dusk; avoid night driving outside town.
- Summer inland heat: plan fuel, shade and water stops, and never leave anyone in a parked car.
- Mobile coverage thins out on the side roads away from the Newell Highway.
A quiet inland town and safe to walk by day. The real risks are the highway: kangaroos and stock at dawn and dusk, long gaps between fuel, and summer heat. Lock the car and keep water with you.
