Gig Harbor
Give Gig Harbor one full day and one night: waterfront walk, harbor museum, a kayak or boat tour, seafood dinner. Two nights if you add Kopachuck or the Narrows bridge.
Gig Harbor is a small waterfront town on the Kitsap Peninsula, about 15 minutes across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge from Tacoma and roughly an hour from Seattle-Tacoma airport by shuttle. It is a harbor first: a compact downtown of shops and seafood restaurants on pilings, a 15-foot lighthouse, a maritime museum, and cold-water kayaking and diving nearby. Most travellers use it as a half-day stop on the way to the Olympic Peninsula, or as a quiet one-night base with a car.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: downtown parking is tight but once parked, the waterfront is walkable. Pierce Transit route 100 links the Kimball Drive Park & Ride, downtown and Purdy; a summer trolley (route 101) follows the same line. The paved Cushman Trail is good for bikes and walking. Boaters can moor at Jerisich Dock (free, 48-hour maximum) or the nearby marinas.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Downtown parking fills on summer weekends; arrive before 11:00 or park at the Kimball Drive Park & Ride.
- Sound Transit route 595 to Seattle runs weekday rush hours only, no weekend service.
- Puget Sound water stays cold year-round: wear a wetsuit for kayaking or diving.
- Shellfishing needs a Washington permit and a check of current health advisories.
- Sales tax is added at the till; restaurant bills expect 18–22% tip.
Very safe for a US small town; the real risks are wet roads on SR-16, cold water, and leaving valuables visible in a parked car.
