Ghent packs a medieval core, the Ghent Altarpiece and a large student population into a centre small enough to cross on foot. Most travellers use it as a quieter, cheaper base than Bruges, with Brussels 30 min and the coast about an hour by train. Two nights covers the core; add a third for museums and a day trip.

Get around
The centre is car-free and walkable; Gent-Sint-Pieters is 30 min on foot or 10–15 min by tram 1 to Korenmarkt. De Lijn runs trams and buses; a single ticket bought on board or at a machine is valid for one hour, and multi-day or 10-trip passes work across Flanders. Bikes are the local default but cobbles and tram rails need care.
