The coastal plain runs about 500 km west from Accra to the Ivorian border, and the reason to come is the castle-and-fort chain: Cape Coast and Elmina are the two you can enter, and 11 sites in all are listed by UNESCO as Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions. Cape Coast is the practical base — both castles are within 20 minutes of it, Kakum is 45 minutes inland, and buses back to Accra run all day. Treat the western beaches (Busua, Dixcove, Axim) and the Volta estuary at Ada Foah as separate add-ons of 2–3 nights each, not as day trips.

Night sequences

Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle are guided-tour only and close to independent wandering; last tours go mid-afternoon — check the day's times at the gate.
Kakum's canopy walkway is a raised boardwalk with queues by mid-morning; go on the first shuttle and skip it in heavy rain.
Tro-tros and shared taxis fill and leave; the last run back from Busua, Dixcove or Nzulezo is early evening — check before you go and keep a taxi number as backup.
The coast road west of Takoradi has unlit stretches and truck traffic; do not plan arrivals after dark.
Castle entry, Kakum tickets and beach lodges are mostly cash; ATMs thin out west of Cape Coast and Takoradi.
