Gero is a hot-spring town on the JR Takayama Line, one of Japan's Three Famous Springs, and it works as a single overnight between Nagoya and Takayama. The onsen district sits across the river from the station and is walkable. Most visitors come for a ryokan night with meals, a bath-touring pass and a footbath, not for a long sightseeing list.

Get around
The onsen district is walkable: station to the far ryokan is about 15–20 min on foot, with a long bridge over the Hida River. Taxis wait at the station and many ryokan run a free shuttle if you ask in advance. For the gorges and outer sights you need a car, bus or train.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings

- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom

- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity

Scams and watch-outs
- Restaurants in the onsen area mostly close between lunch and dinner: eat before 14:00 or after 17:00.
- The free riverside outdoor bath is mixed and visible from the bridge; swimwear is required.
- Ryokan rates usually include dinner and breakfast: book with meals or you may find little open nearby at night.
- Some ryokan shuttles need a request in advance, not on arrival.
Gero is a small, low-crime onsen town; the real risks are icy paths in winter, the mixed outdoor bath, and arriving with no bed in a town where rooms sell out on autumn and New Year weekends.
