Germany in May: what to expect

May is the month Germany's outdoor season starts in earnest. Days are long — roughly 15 hours of light by late May, with sunset around 21:00–21:30 in the north — and temperatures climb from cool in the first week to genuinely mild by the end. Expect roughly 17–20 °C by day and 7–10 °C at night in Berlin, the Rhine and the south; the North Sea and Baltic coasts run a few degrees cooler and windier, and Alpine valleys can still see snow on high ground.

Rain is the variable, not the temperature. May is changeable everywhere: showers, fast-moving fronts and short thunderstorms, heaviest in the Alps, the Black Forest and the south. It rarely rains all day, so a light waterproof shell beats an umbrella. The Rhine and Moselle valleys and the east are usually the driest and warmest regions; Hamburg and the coasts are the greyest.

May sits in the medium band: busier than March and April, quieter than July and August. City hotels fill for trade fairs — Frankfurt, Hannover and Leipzig host spring events — and the holiday Thursdays create long weekends that Germans use for short trips, so trains and guesthouses along the Rhine, in the Harz and around the Bavarian lakes sell out first.

Prices follow the same pattern. Expect medium rates in Berlin, Munich and Cologne, with spikes on the bridge weekends and around 1 May. Booking midweek travel and locking in train seats early is the cheapest way to handle May.

May's calendar is built around moving church holidays rather than fixed festivals. Labour Day on 1 May is a legal holiday nationwide: shops close, Berlin sees demonstrations, and beer gardens and terraces open for the season. Ascension falls on a Thursday (6 May in 2027), Whit Monday on 17 May 2027, and Corpus Christi on 27 May 2027 in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and some other states — each creates a bridge weekend.

Alongside the holidays, wine villages on the Rhine, Moselle and in Franconia open their outdoor season with wine and blossom festivals, and spring trade fairs in Frankfurt, Hannover and Leipzig lift city hotel rates on fair dates. Holiday dates shift yearly, so check the current calendar before booking.

May rewards the regions where the season starts earliest. The Rhine and Moselle valleys and the west are the mildest and driest, with terraces open and river towns at their easiest before the summer crowds. Berlin and the east give long light evenings, lake country within reach of the city and the densest run of museums and galleries for a wet day.

In the south, Bavaria and the Alps are open for walking but the high routes can still hold snow; start hikes early to dodge afternoon thunderstorms. The coasts are the weakest bet in May — windy and grey — though the islands are quiet and cheap before June. If you want one base, Berlin or Munich plus a Rhine or Moselle stop covers the month well.

Pack for two seasons in one trip: mild afternoons and cold nights, plus rain that arrives fast. Layers work better than a single heavy coat, and shoes need to be broken in before you leave if you plan to walk in the Alps or the Black Forest. Tap water is safe to drink across Germany, so a refillable bottle saves money.

April is cooler and wetter but cheaper, with blossom and the start of white-asparagus season. June is warmer with longer evenings and warmer lakes, but crowds and prices climb. If your dates are flexible, May and September are the two months that balance weather, crowds and cost best.
