Germantown
Skip Germantown as a base unless you have a reason to be in Montgomery County's suburbs: it is a car-dependent town of about 90,000 with one MARC station and no downtown core.
Germantown is an unincorporated suburb of Washington, DC, roughly 40-45 minutes by car or about 40 minutes by MARC train from Union Station. It has no walkable centre: sights, parks and restaurants are spread along MD-118, MD-355 and Father Hurley Blvd, so a car is the practical way to move. Most travellers pass through on the MARC Brunswick line or use it as a cheaper bed base for Montgomery County and DC.

A car is the practical choice: the town spreads over several exits of I-270 (13, 15, 16) and MD-355. RideOn county buses link Germantown with Gaithersburg, Rockville, Bethesda, Silver Spring and Wheaton, and connect to Metrorail for DC. MARC Brunswick line runs to Union Station, Rockville, Gaithersburg and Frederick, but mostly on weekdays.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- MARC Brunswick line is commuter-oriented: few or no weekend trains, so check the timetable before planning a car-free day.
- Sidewalks are missing along parts of MD-355 and MD-118: walking between strips is not realistic.
- Summer afternoons are hot and humid; plan park time for the morning.
- Hotel rates spike when DC-area events fill Montgomery County.
A low-crime suburban area; the real risks are traffic on I-270 and MD-355, missing sidewalks, and deer on the roads at dusk.
