Geraldton is the Mid West's main port and service city, 420 km north of Perth on the Brand Highway or the slower Indian Ocean Drive. Most travellers sleep one night here on the way to Kalbarri or Shark Bay. Two nights buys you the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, the HMAS Sydney memorial and the beaches.

Get around
The centre is walkable. Eight local bus routes cover the outlying beaches (800 loops downtown every 30 min; 850/851 north, 854/855 south, 856 to the West End and lighthouse). Local buses do not reach Greenough, Dongara or Northampton: take the TransWA coach. Car hire (Avis, Hertz, Budget, Thrifty) is essential for Kalbarri or Shark Bay.
