Gera is a former Reuss residence and textile town in east Thuringia, with a large Renaissance town hall, a walkable old town and museums tied to painter Otto Dix and Bauhaus ceramics. It is not a headline destination, but it is a cheap, quiet base for a day or an overnight on the Jena–Zwickau rail line, and most sights sit within 15 minutes on foot of the Marktplatz.
