George Town, Grand Cayman by district

Grand Cayman is a flat island about 35 km long. George Town sits on the west coast, Seven Mile Beach and Camana Bay a short drive north, West Bay at the north-west tip, Rum Point and North Side across the sound, and the quiet East End and Bodden Town along the south coast. Distances look short but there are few routes, so traffic bunches at the roundabouts at rush hour.

  • George Town waterfront (Harbour Drive): Flat and compact, but shade is thin and cruise-day crowds fill it from mid-morning. Suits: A first morning: museum, fort ruins, Heroes Square and the harbour.
  • Panton Street and Elgin Avenue: A half-hour stop with a list; closed on Sundays. Suits: Banks, duty-free shops, rum cake and weekday counter lunches.
  • Camana Bay: Feels European and clean; an easy evening without a car once you are there. Suits: A walkable planned town centre with a tower, a weekly morning market, restaurants and a cinema.
  • Seven Mile Beach: The beach is public and long; resorts rent chairs, and the strip has many restaurants. A car or taxi is needed for George Town and boats. Suits: A first stay: sand, resorts, dive shops and beach bars on one road. Price band $$$.
  • George Town centre (as a bed): Quiet after dark and a 10–15 minute drive from the beach; useful for an early flight or a one-night stay. Suits: A lower-cost base near the harbour and the airport. Price band $$.
